Mobile and how this should impact your email communication strategy

If mobile phone usage stats today suggest that there is 1 mobile phone for every Australian in Australia, 1.2 mobile phones for every Britain in the UK and even more in other parts of the world. Mobile is changing the way we communicate.

Advances in technology are powering ahead and it is standard for your phone to do significantly more than make and take calls. In fact using your phone to call is a feature you probably didn’t even check when you last bought your phone.

A recent report conducted by Nielsen, states that during Q2 of 2012 in the US, smart phone penetration continued to grow, with  54.9% of American subscribers owning a smart phone, which is only slightly up on Australians at 52% (Source – Our Mobile Planet).

Some other Australian stats (Source – Our Mobile Planet):

  • 74% don’t leave home without their phone
  • 65% of them access the internet everyday
  • 57% accessing emails
  • 78% visits social networking sites
  • 80% multitask with their Smart phone
  • 94% have researched a product or service on their phone

These stats are not alarming but they certainly highlight the need for you to consider a change or shift in thinking in order to make sure your business is capitalising on this. This subject can get vast very quickly.

So today we focus on Email. If 57% of smart phone users are accessing their emails on their phone, then how optimised is your template and more so how optimised are the landing pages you are sending the user through to?

Consider testing all of your emails on a mobile before you send any campaign, make sure the landing pages you are clicking through to render quickly and are easy to view on your mobile. If not, tone down your expectations. The other not well known fact is that mobiles that render the images directly (iPhone for example) are in fact opening the email every time. This can and will impact your stats. When you view your reports have a look at the clients to help get a feel of what mix of mobile vs. desktop users are in your lists.

The simple fact is, mobile is here for good and everyone needs to embrace it.
